A new version of Valoya’s advanced daylight simulator, LightDNA, will hit the shelves in the second half of 2016. The new fixture is bar shaped and ideal for growth rooms, chambers and controlled greenhouse compartments for mid- and high intensity applications.

Valoya’s new spectrum is a scaled down version of the high end LightDNA dynamic outdoor spectrum. The new spectrum version in Valoya B-series fixtures brings dynamic outdoor light available to every growth chamber, room and shelf. With this solution, solar simulation is not anymore limited to high end laboratories and small research rooms.

The new fixture allows simulation of clear daylight, dawn and dusk conditions, as well as meeting various red/far-red ratios. The new system brings the dynamic nature of outdoor light spectrum to controlled environments and opens up new possibilities for simulating field conditions in plant breeding, ecological climate change studies and plant research in general.

Harvest Urban Farms, a major vertical farm in Vancouver, Canada, starts shipping produce grown under Valoya LED lights. Valoya was selected as light supplier due to the superior performance of the lights and the dedicated support and know-how of the Valoya team.

Harvest Urban Farms launched its first urban vertical farm, in April 2016, at 950 Cordova, in central Vancouver. The farm, which is the first phase of an even larger vertical farm operation, provides Vancouver restaurants and grocery stores with fresh, locally-grown produce year round. The leafy greens and other vegetables are grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides, using ultra-efficient LED lights and water recycling technology.

In the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI), in Vienna, Austria High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps were replaced by Valoya AP67 luminaires. After a test period conducted by the lab manager Borries Luberacki, Valoya´s AP67 spectrum was chosen to be the replacement for the former HPS lamps. For this decision, the light quality as well as the energy saving aspects were taken into account.

The workshop of the GMI built an amazing construction, which, together with Valoya´s B-series products, provides full mobility and flexibility in adjusting light intensity and uniformity. The lights are used by many researchers for a wide variety of applications at the same time.

Valoya´s spectrum AP67 covers all needed wavelengths such as green, blue, red and far-red. The photoactive radiation is 83%. The benches in the GMI’s greenhouse were equipped with B-series fixtures as seen in the picture. Valoya’s B-series has the Ingress Protection Rating of 55 (IP-rating). The institute also used Valoya’s C-series (IP-rating of 66) with the same spectrum for their shelves. Therefore, Valoya products give not only the right choice of spectrum, but are also very flexible in their models and use.

The spectrum AP67 is also successfully in use for Rose, Phalenonopsis, Strawberries, wheat and sugar beets in greenhouses outside of the GMI. For the needed light intensities our 3D Simulations will calculate the exact amount of needed luminaires focusing on uniformity and optimum energy efficiency.

Valoya’s C90 of the C-series LED lights is now cETLus-certified. This means that it has passed all tests required for standards in US and Canada. The C90 now meets the growing demand from professional North American growers for vertical farming applications and for use in tissue culture and other multilayer growing applications.

The dimmable, passively cooled, C-series has gained popularity in Europe, where it has already been available since 2015. The dimmable C-series fixtures are available in all Valoya standard spectra for various applications including research with artificial daylight, optimized lighting for various species in plant breeding, seed production and food production without daylight in vertical farms. All the C-series fixtures are manufactured by ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems) and ISO14001 (Environmental Management Systems) certified factory. The products are made in Europe.
