Green algae (Chlorophyta) are microalgae found in fresh water, saline water, alpine snowfields, or in dry land. A component of theirs, Astaxanthin, has important applications in the nutraceutical, cosmetics, food, and feed industries due to its strong antioxidant activity for humans and animals. The high amount of astaxanthin is present in the resting cells of algae, which are produced and rapidly accumulated when the environmental conditions become unfavorable for normal cell growth. Examples of such conditions include bright light, high salinity, and low availability of nutrients.
Depending on the growth phase of algae, different parts of light spectrum are needed to induce efficient development of astaxanthin. Valoya’s spectra have been found to significantly boost this process and help create high concentration of this substance.
Optimal light spectrum provides increased yields as well as energy savings. Valoya’s spectra enable superior growth at lower light intensities than traditional light or un-optimized generic LEDs. Valoya’s spectra have been tested and used for algae production and it has been found that a combination of two of our spectra in appropriate development phases of algae development result in high astaxanthin levels.
Valoya’s lights use high efficiency LEDs with optimal passive cooling resulting in minimal heat radiation towards the plants. This, and the high modularity of some of our luminaries such as the L-series products and the uniform light spectrum (ie. full spectrum LEDs are used, not combinations of red-blue) enables them to be used up to proximities of 15 cm from plants.

Valoya’s products are designed to have a long use life, typically rated at 90% of initial output at 35000 hours, which in most cases leads to a productive life of 7-8 years and beyond. The long use life is a result of excellent thermal properties of the LED fixture and the high quality power units used by Valoya.
